COC works towards a world in which everyone can fulfil their potential, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or sex characteristics.
Founded in 1946, COC Netherlands is the world’s oldest still operating LGBTI organisation. As a federation of 20 local associations, we have over 35 staff members and hundreds of volunteers.
Supporting the LGBTI movement in over 35 countries around the world
We support LGBTI organisations, groups and initiatives in all regions of the world in their efforts to build their own strong and confident LGBTI communities. We provide funding, coaching, training and access to international networks and intergovernmental bodies. We aim to work in longer term partnerships.
In many cases, LGBTI organisations can create social change at the national level by engaging with regional and international human rights mechanisms. COC shares its expertise on these mechanisms and its extensive international network with LGBTI groups, enabling them to advocate within international organisations such as the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Council of Europe, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the Organization of American States. COC is one of the few LGBTI organisations in the world that has a special consultative status at the United Nations.
Our supporter: Ministry of Foreign Affairs
COC has a recognised Strategic Partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and works very closely with Dutch Embassies around the world, the Human Rights Department and the Department of Aid Cooperation. The Dutch government pursues a policy to combat discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender identity and sex characteristics – a policy based on the principle of non-discrimination. The Netherlands holds the view that this principle should be applied globally to include all grounds – including those of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics and aligns itself with the Yogyakarta Principles.
The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs provides support for the following long-term programmes: PRIDE, Bridging the Gaps, Allies in Action, Hands Off!, the Pink Orange Alliance and others.
